Humanitarian Aid Missions to Ukraine through the European Civil Protection Mechanism

During the one year that has passed since the beginning of the Russian invasion, Greece has participated in eight humanitarian aid missions to Ukraine, through the European Civil Protection Mechanism. The missions involved medicines, health material and other protection items.

The first shipment of medical equipment took place between 28.02.2022 and 04.03.2022. It was delivered to the European Civil Protection Mechanism hub in Poland and consisted of medical equipment (32 pallets) offered by the Greek Ministry of Health.

The second shipment took place between 11.03.2022 and 16.03.2022. It was delivered to the European Civil Protection Mechanism hub in Poland and consisted of medicines and health material (54 pallets) offered by the Greek Ministry of Health.

The third shipment took place between 18.03.2022 and 21.03.2022. It was again delivered to the European Civil Protection Mechanism hub in Poland and contained food assistance, personal hygiene items and shelter items (66 pallets) offered by the Non Governmental Organisation “The Smile of the Child”.

On 27.04.2022, the “rescEU Medical Stockpile” facility, hosted in Greece, was activated to send aid to Ukraine. The Emergency Response and Coordination Center (ERCC) of the European Commission Greece requested the assistance of Greece in order to send 953,599 pairs of gloves to Ukraine from the stock of the aforementioned stockpile. The shipment left on 29.04.2022 for the European Civil Protection Mechanism hub in Romania. The material was delivered at the hub on 03.05.2022 and was forwarded to Ukraine by the European Civil Protection Mechanism in cooperation with the European Civil Protection Mechanism.

The next Greek shipment of medicines, medical technological equipment and sanitary material took place between 17.06.2022 and 21.06.2022. The material (86 pallets) was donated by the Greek Ministry of Health and was delivered to UCPM Logistics Hub in Poland (NEUCA Pabianice, Poland).

On 16.06.2022, the “rescEU Medical Stockpile” facility hosted in Greece was reactivated to send aid to Ukraine. The Emergency Response and Coordination Center (ERCC) of the European Commission requested the assistance of Greece in order to send 200,000 pieces of medium protection hazmat suits and 100,000 pieces of high protection hazmat suits to Ukraine from the stock of the aforementioned stockpile. The shipment left on 22.06.2022 for the European Civil Protection Mechanism hub in Romania. The material was delivered on July 21, 2022 and was forwarded to Ukraine by the European Civil Protection Mechanism in cooperation with the European Civil Protection Mechanism.

On 22.09.2022, a new shipment of medicines and health material (7 pallets) was offered by the Greek Ministry of Health and it was delivered to the UCPM Logistics Hub in Poland (NEUCA Pabianice Poland).

On 09.01.2023, the “rescEU Medical Stockpile” facility hosted in Greece was activated again to send aid to Ukraine. The Emergency Response and Coordination Center (ERCC) of the European Commission invited Greece to send the following material to Ukraine from the stock of the aforementioned facility: 143,380 medium protection hazmat suits, 142,582 high protection hazmat suits, 25,200 protective glasses, 151,383 FFP3 masks and 325,575 disposable shoe covers. The transport of the materials to the European Civil Protection Mechanism hub in Poland was undertaken by EC Broker (100% coverage of the transport costs by the European Commission).
