Greek Contribution to the World Food Programme (WFP) to Address the Crisis in Cuba

Cuba has been facing, in recent years, an extremely difficult economic and social situation, resulting in a significant decline in the standard of living for a large portion of the population.

The country is experiencing shortages of basic goods such as electricity, fuel, food, medicine, and drinking water. Low agricultural and livestock productivity, combined with limited access to external markets and frequent natural disasters, undermines food security in the country. As a result, there is an increased need for powdered milk, rice, pasta, flour, juices, canned food, and more.

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is active in Cuba in critical areas such as strengthening resilient and sustainable local food systems, school feeding, nutrition education, and more.

Among other things, the WFP provides specially fortified nutritional foods, including enriched products, with an emphasis on initiatives such as the mother-child program and support for the elderly through the “Sistemas de Atención a Familias” system (community kitchens operating under state supervision and serving particularly vulnerable population groups).

In this context, Greece has made a contribution to support the WFP’s efforts in Cuba, aiming to provide food assistance to vulnerable groups of the population.
