Global Gateway Strategy for Investment in Georgia

According to the information from the Office of Economic and Commercial Affairs of the Greek Embassy in Tbilisi, the projects implemented within the framework of the Global Gateway strategy 2023, include the Black Sea Connectivity sub-marine electricity cable, which is co-financed by the EU and for which a feasibility study is under preparation by the World Bank.

Within 2024, it is planned to start a study for the mapping of the seabed, provision of technical assistance to the Government of Georgia, as well as implementation of small-scale infrastructure projects related to the implementation of the submarine interconnector cable.

The EU aims to have a limited involvement in the specific project while expects involvement of the private sector, while given the technical difficulty of its construction, as well as the workload of the two companies that have the relevant know-how, the completion of the project is not expected before 2030.

Regarding Global Gateway 2024 projects, Georgia is currently involved in two EBRD proposals, on critical raw materials and partnerships with private institutional investors.
