According to reports from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA), an estimated 4.2 million people in Cuba are in need of humanitarian assistance. Restrictions on fuel imports have drastically reduced energy availability throughout the country, causing widespread power outages that are severely affecting essential national infrastructure and disrupting public transport, access to safe water, sanitation services and food distribution networks.
The UN World Food Programme (WFP) is already active in Cuba in critical areas, such as school feeding, strengthening resilient and sustainable local food systems, education on healthy eating, the provision of specialized foods of high nutritional value including fortified products to support vulnerable groups of the population (infants, toddlers, pregnant women, the elderly), etc.
Within the framework of the WFP Strategic Action Plan for the period 2026-2030, Greece contributed the amount of 150,000 euros for actions of this UN agency in Cuba regarding the provision of food aid to sensitive population groups.
