The establishment of the UN High Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development was mandated by United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in 2012, in its outcome document “The Future We Want”.
The HLPF’s annual sessions, under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), last eight days, including a three-day ministerial segment. In addition, the HLPF is convened every four years under the auspices of the General Assembly for two days, at the level of Heads of State and Government.
HLPF’s thematic focus
2019: Empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality
2018: Transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies
2017: Eradicating poverty and promoting prosperity in a changing world
2016: Ensuring that no one is left behind
2015: Strengthening integration, implementation and review
2014: Achieving the MDGs and charting the way for an ambitious post-
2015 development agenda, including the SDGs
2013: Building the future we want: from Rio+20 to the post-2015
development agenda
The 7th session of the UN HLPF on Sustainable Development will take place, under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), from 9 to 15 July 2019, followed by a three-day ministerial meeting convening from 16 to 18 July 2019, held jointly with ECOSOC’s annual high-level segment. HLPF 2019 will focus on ‘Empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality’ and conduct an in-depth review of:
SDG 4 (quality education),
SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth),
SDG 10 (reduced inequalities),
SDG 13 (climate action),
SDG 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions),
SDG 17 (partnerships for the Goals), which is reviewed every year.
In addition to the annual July session, a meeting of the HLPF will also be held on 24-25 September 2019, under UN General Assembly auspices, at the level of Heads of State and Government. HLPF meetings under UNGA auspices take place every four years, at the beginning of the UNGA session. The work of the 74th session (UNGA 74) will commence on 17 September 2019. Among other items, HLPF 2019 will consider the quadrennial Global Sustainable Development Report (GSDR). Only one outcome document will result from the two sessions.
During the week of the debate, various high-level events will be held:
23 September: A Climate Summit.
26 September: The UNGA will conduct a high-level dialogue on financing for development (FfD).
27 September: The UNGA will hold the high-level meeting to review progress made in addressing priorities of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) through the implementation of the SIDS Accelerated Modalities of Action (SAMOA) Pathway.
