Installation of bridges in affected areas of Armenia

In November 2024, Greece, through the Ministry of National Defense*, offered three bailey bridges to the areas of the Lori region of Northern Armenia affected by floods in May 2024.

Their installation was carried out by the system of the “Construction and Disaster Management Administration”, which went to the area. The relevant request had been received by the Greek side through the Embassy of Greece in Yerevan. The cost of transporting the bridges was borne by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (General Directorate for Development and Humanitarian Aid).

The first bridge was installed in the village of Karkop (on the Debed River) and the second in the village of Hobardzi (on the smaller Gargar River). During his visit to the region, the Mayor of Alaverdi, Mr. D. Ghumashyan thanked for the works and stressed their importance for the region. The third bridge remains to be installed in the village of Ayrum, also on the Debed River and a short distance from Karkop.

The Greek presence in the region dates back to the 19th century. The local Greek Community is based in the small town of Alaverdi.

Greece will continue supporting Armenia. Its contribution underscores the long-lasting historical ties between the peoples and the cooperation developed between the two countries.
